Google Business Profile optimisation in Cairns: a practical checklist
Short answer
To optimise your Google Business Profile in Cairns, get the basics exactly right: your real business name, the best primary category, accurate hours, a correct address or service area, and a clear description of what you do. Then keep it active with real photos, regular posts and a steady flow of genuine reviews that you reply to. Google favours profiles that are complete, accurate and kept up to date.

For a lot of Cairns and Tablelands businesses, the Google Business Profile does more work than the website. It is what shows up in the map results when someone searches for a mechanic in Mareeba or a cafe in Yungaburra. It is where people read reviews, check your hours and tap to call. Yet most profiles I look at are only half finished.
Here is the checklist I work through with clients. You can do most of it yourself in an afternoon.
1. Get the core details right
Business name
Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signage and paperwork. Adding extra keywords like 'Best Plumber Cairns' to your name goes against Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended. It's not worth the risk.
Primary category
Your primary category is one of the most important choices on the profile. Pick the one that best describes your main service, then add secondary categories only where they genuinely apply. Looking at what the top businesses in your field use is a good guide.
Address or service area
If customers come to you, show your address. If you travel to them, like a lot of trades across the Tablelands do, you can hide your address and list the suburbs and towns you serve instead. Make sure your address, phone number and website match what is on your site.
Hours
Keep your opening hours accurate and set special hours for public holidays and closures. Nothing loses a customer faster than turning up to a locked door after Google said you were open.
2. Describe what you actually do
Write a description that says who you help, what you do and where, in plain language. Mention your main services and the areas you cover naturally, without stuffing in keywords. Then fill in the services or products section properly, because it helps Google understand what you offer and gives customers more reasons to choose you.
3. Add real photos, regularly
Upload photos of your work, your team, your vehicle, your shopfront and the inside of your premises. Real photos build trust far better than stock images. Add new ones regularly rather than all at once, so the profile looks active.
4. Build a steady flow of reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest signals you control. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to every review, good or bad, politely and personally. Don't offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, as that goes against Google's policies. I've written more about this in reviews are your ranking superpower.
5. Post updates
Google posts let you share offers, news, events and recent work right on your profile. A short post each week with a real photo keeps the profile fresh and gives people a reason to click. Keep them simple and local.
6. Make sure your website backs it up
Your profile and your website work together. Link your profile to the most relevant page, ideally one about your main service and area, and make sure your site clearly mentions the suburbs and towns you serve. If your profile says you cover Atherton and Malanda, your website should too.
7. Check in every month
Log in at least once a month. Check whether anyone has suggested edits that changed your details, reply to new reviews, add a photo and a post, and look at the performance figures to see how people are finding you and what they do next.
Common mistakes I see
The usual ones are a wrong or vague primary category, out-of-date hours, no new photos since the day the profile was set up, unanswered reviews, and duplicate profiles left over from an old address or phone number. Each one is fixable, and fixing them is usually the quickest win available.

Frequently asked questions
Can I optimise my Google Business Profile for free?
Yes. Everything in this checklist can be done for free inside your profile. It takes time rather than money: accurate details, the right category, real photos, regular posts and replying to reviews.
Why isn't my business showing on Google Maps in Cairns?
Common reasons include an unverified or suspended profile, the wrong primary category, the searcher being some distance from you, or a thin profile with few reviews and photos. Start by checking your profile is verified and complete.
Can I have a Google Business Profile without a shopfront?
Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address and list the areas they serve instead. You still need a real address for verification, but it doesn't have to be shown publicly.
How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?
Weekly is a good rhythm for most local businesses. Consistency matters more than volume, so pick a pace you can keep up.
