SEO consultant in Cairns or an agency? How to choose
Short answer
If you want one person who knows your business, answers the phone and does the work themselves, a Cairns SEO consultant is usually the better fit. If you need a large team running many channels at once, an agency can make sense. For most owner-operated local businesses, what matters most is who actually does the work, how they report on it, and whether they understand your local market.

I get asked this a lot, usually by owners who have been burnt before. They paid someone every month, got a report full of graphs, and still couldn't tell whether the phone was ringing more. So let's keep it simple.
What an SEO consultant does
An SEO consultant is usually one person, or a very small team, who looks after your search visibility directly. The person you meet is the person doing the work. They review your website, your Google Business Profile, the searches your customers make and what your competitors are doing, then they fix what is holding you back.
In a place like Cairns that matters. The searches are local, the competition is often another small business down the road, and a lot of the wins come from getting the basics right on your site and your Google profile. You don't need a big team for that. You need someone who pays attention.
What an SEO agency does
An agency has more people and more departments. That can be useful if you run several locations, a big online store, or SEO alongside paid ads, social media and content all at once. The trade-off is that your account often sits with an account manager, and the person who actually changes your website may be someone you never speak to.
Neither is good or bad on its own. It comes down to fit.
Consultant or agency: how to decide
Choose a consultant if
You are an owner-operator or a small team. You want to deal with one person who knows your business by name. Your customers are mostly in Cairns, the Tablelands or another local area. You want plain answers, and you would rather spend your budget on the work than on layers of management.
Choose an agency if
You have several sites or locations, a large product range, or an in-house marketing team that needs a bigger partner to plug into. You are happy to work through an account manager and you need lots of specialists on call at the same time.
Questions to ask any SEO provider in Cairns
Whoever you talk to, a few questions will tell you a lot in the first meeting. Start with who will actually do the work on your website and Google profile, and ask for a name. Then ask what they will do in the first three months, in plain English, and how they will show you whether it is working. Good answers talk about enquiries, calls and bookings, not just rankings.
Ask whether you own everything: your website, your Google Business Profile, your analytics and any content they write. You should. Ask how long the contract runs and what happens if you leave. And ask what they know about your area. Showing up for a service in Smithfield or Mareeba is a different job to ranking across the whole country.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees a number one ranking. Google doesn't sell top spots, so nobody can honestly promise one.
What SEO work looks like in practice
For most local businesses the work falls into a few buckets. Fixing the technical basics so Google can read your site properly. Building clear service pages that match what people actually search, with a page for each main service and the areas you cover. Getting your Google Business Profile complete and active. Earning genuine reviews. Then adding helpful content over time that answers the questions your customers ask.
None of that is magic. It is steady, consistent work, and it builds on itself. You can see how local search work has played out for a Cairns restaurant in the Waterbar & Grill case study, and if you want the bigger picture, read why local SEO matters for Cairns businesses.
How I work
I run The Bearded Marketer as a consultant, not an agency. When you work with me, you deal with me. I learn how your business makes money, who your best customers are and where they come from, then I focus the work on the searches that lead to enquiries. Business is personal, and I think your marketing should be handled that way too.
If you want to see what that looks like for your business, have a look at my SEO consultant in Cairns or book a strategy session and we can talk it through.
Frequently asked questions
Is an SEO consultant cheaper than an agency?
Not always, but you usually pay for less overhead. With a consultant, more of your budget tends to go into the work itself rather than account management. Compare what is actually included, not just the monthly price.
How long does SEO take to work in Cairns?
It depends on your website, your competition and how much needs fixing. Quick fixes to your Google Business Profile and site can help sooner, while stronger rankings for competitive searches take longer. Be cautious of anyone who promises fixed timeframes or guaranteed positions.
Do I need SEO if I already get plenty of word of mouth?
Word of mouth is great, but most people still look you up on Google before they call. SEO makes sure you show up and look credible when they do, and helps people who haven't heard of you yet find you.
Can a Cairns SEO consultant help businesses on the Tablelands or in Townsville?
Yes. Local SEO is about the areas your customers are in, not where the consultant sits. I work with businesses across Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands and Townsville.
